Stories from the Sea

Stories from the City to the Sea was commissioned by Hull UK City of Culture 2017 and produced by Small Things Creative Projects.

Between June and December 2017, as part of Hull’s year as UK City of Culture, Smallthings delivered creative sessions with older people at four different settings in Hull – Butterflies Memory Loss Support Group, Endike Community Care, Fernleigh Day Centre and Overton House. The aim was to use their unique, imaginative approach to bring people living with dementia, and the people who support them, right to the heart of City of Culture. The sessions were sensory, active and fun; each one taking a different theme inspired by artworks, performances and exhibitions from the City of Culture programme. They linked together music, drama and visual art to provide a starting point for groups to tell their own stories, create their own artwork and write their own poetry. As a result of this I was asked to produce this booklet which is included a selection of these.

This booklet is a document of the laughter, the generosity and the togetherness that developed during the project. It is a collection of individual voices, ideas and poems that were shared and listened to.
